Family Firearms Training Can Reduce Anxiety about Having a Gun in the House

If you have a gun in the home, it is wise to invest in proper firearms training for the whole family. Even if you are not interested in teaching your child to learn to shoot at a young age, gun training that focuses on safety is important for everyone.

The Two Sides of Gun Ownership for Adults

As an adult, it is your Second Amendment right to have a gun, whether you use it for personal security and protection or for recreation. In our society, innocent people are the victims of home break-ins, so you may feel that having a gun on hand will protect you. You may also enjoy hunting or the exciting sport of marksmanship. A third scenario is that you may carry a gun for your job and are required to keep it in your home even when you are off duty. Regardless of the reason for having a gun in the home, it does have certain risks, and it can be a source of anxiety for some family members.

If you have children, it's important to remember that they are naturally curious and are very adept at finding what adults think that they have safely hidden. Worrying about children accidentally "finding" and playing with a gun can be a major source of anxiety for a parent. Instead of doing a better job "hiding" the gun, a good solution is to educate the children about gun safety so that they are not tempted to investigate on their own.

Family Firearms Training for All

Family firearms training can get everyone in the household thinking about firearms safety and how to handle guns in the home. Often held at gun shops or at private academies, gun courses might have several different approaches:

  • Adults, especially those who have acquired their first gun, must learn how to handle their weapon, how to clean it, how to use it, and how to store it. A good firearms course will help you develop good habits for handling and maintaining your gun. Just as important as learning how to use a gun in dangerous situations is to learn how to avoid dangerous situations, familiarizing yourself with personal and home safety practices, and being aware of the legal implications of injuring or killing someone with a gun.
  • Children need to learn what to do if they find a gun in the home to prevent dangers to themselves and others. The four basic rules, promoted by the NRA and other organizations, are: to immediately stop what they're doing, do not touch the gun, leave the area where the gun is, and tell an adult right away. Gun classes reinforce these principles in an age-appropriate way.
  • For families where guns, hunting, and recreational shooting are part of the culture, learning how to handle a gun correctly is important. A common curriculum for this type of course might include: firearm safety rules, handgun nomenclature to correctly learn what gun parts are called, safe loading and unloading practices, handgun and ammunition selection, and finally, the fundamentals of marksmanship.

Coupled with proper gun storage in the home, gun classes can make your home safer and give both adults and children peace of mind. RAIN6 offers gun safety classes for individuals, kids, groups or private families.
